💡 The Center Game is a very old opening in which White recaptures with the queen, 3.Qxd4, after 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4. It was already known by the late 16th century, and in the 19th century players such as Tarrasch, Chigorin and Paulsen played it regularly. White tends to lose time by bringing the queen out early, but can castle queenside and go for an aggressive kingside attack. Shabalov revived it in the 1990s, and top players such as Shirov and Nepomniachtchi have tried it since.
