💡 The Réti Opening begins 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4, with White challenging the center from the side using the knight and the c-pawn. It is named after Richard Réti, a grandmaster from Czechoslovakia. Along with Nimzowitsch, Réti was one of the leading “hypermodern” players, who spread the idea of controlling the center with pieces from a distance instead of occupying it with pawns. At New York 1924, Réti used this opening to defeat the reigning world champion, Capablanca.
