Kan Sicilian

💡 The Kan Sicilian is a very flexible Sicilian setup in which Black combines ...e6 and ...a6. It's named after the Soviet master Ilya Kan, and it's also called the Paulsen Variation after Louis Paulsen, who played it in the 19th century. Top players such as Karpov have used it. Black holds back piece development and decides where to put the pieces after seeing what White does. It's easier to play without memorizing the huge theory of lines like the Najdorf or Dragon, but White can more easily get ahead in development.
