💡 The French Advance Variation is White's plan of pushing 3.e5 against the French Defense and closing the center. White gains space with the d4 and e5 pawns, while Black typically tries to break the chain with ...c5 and ...f6. Nimzowitsch favored it in the first half of the 20th century, and later players such as Sveshnikov studied it deeply. Another feature of this line is that Black's c8 bishop can easily get stuck behind the e6 pawn.
