💡 The French Defense is a solid opening in which Black plays 1.e4 e6 and then challenges the center with ...d5. Its name comes from an 1834 correspondence match between London and Paris, in which the Paris side played this setup. Black defends with the solid ...e6/...d5 pawn structure and typically counterattacks White's center with ...c5 or ...f6. The downside is that the c8 bishop easily gets stuck behind its own pawns.
