Alekhine's Defense

💡 The Alekhine Defense is a provocative opening in which Black attacks White's e4 pawn with the knight, 1.e4 Nf6. It's named after Alexander Alekhine, the fourth World Champion, who popularized it at a 1921 tournament. Black deliberately lets White's pawns advance and then attacks the broad center later, a hypermodern idea (controlling the center with pieces from a distance rather than occupying it with pawns). Fischer also used this distinctive opening in the 1972 World Championship.
